Compiled by Reverend H. Fulford Williams. Typescript notes, mainly parish histories but also including a brief biography of John Haddy James of Exeter, surgeon, will abstracts (Hole family of Crediton, Zeal Monachorum, etc., 1547-1805, Andrew Fulford of Littleham, Exmouth, 1642, William Williams of Exeter, 1785, and Richard Haddy of Exeter, 1778) and particulars of sale of the Lindridge Estate, Bishopsteignton, 1962.
About a quarter of Devon's parishes are covered by the histories. The information recorded includes position and description, area and soil, population and other statistics, etymology of place names, manorial history, heraldry, the church and ancient chapels, houses and ancient sites, communications and bibliography. In some cases, there is detail of prominent local families and individuals, flora, agriculture and industry, markets and fairs, schools, local customs and extracts or transcripts of original documents.
The notes on parishes in the Hundred of Teignbridge incorporate notes by the Reverend J.P. Jones made in the 1820s for a proposed history of Devon (originals in the Bodleian Library, Oxford).
