Admin history
  • Three facts make it difficult to arrange this collection. Firstly, a member of the Hamlyn family was an attorney as well as landowner, and it is sometimes quite impossible to be sure whether Hamlyn was dealing with estate matters in his own right or whether he was acting on behalf of a client. Secondly, there is another branch of the Calmady family and therefore there is another set of deeds and papers which have not been kept with this collection.Thirdly, the whole collection has unfortunately received very severe damage through damp; every document is frail and many are virtually unuseable, some have been totally destroyed. With these serious gaps in the collection it has theerfore been decided to arrange both deeds and papeers under rather arbitrary divisions, either alphabetically by parish or personal surname.
