Diaries of Emily Mary Sparkes (nee Lyster) known as Min, (born c. 1859, died 1954) of Oakcliff, Dawlish Warren in Devon. 1890-1952. Includes diaries covering residence in India (1890-1910), and the First and Second World war period; a memoranda book; numerous loose enclosures in diaries including letters, photographs, newspaper cuttings, prints/drawings, notes and some artefacts; and photograph of Oakcliff, Dawlish Warren in diary of 1941.
The diary entries are very detailed until the last two years. Note: no diaries have been deposited for the years 1923 - 1940.
From 1903, Min's diaries start with a roll call of various relatives and family friends. Almost each day records the weather in meticulous detail, and the family's very active and varied social life. They were well off and could afford medical treatment, which is described in some detail. There is some coverage of the national news, including Herbert's eventually successful electioneering. Life in India is described in detail.
The artefacts are mostly botanical specimens.
